Homestay overlooking Thiksey Monastery!
Located just 19 km from Leh, Thiksey Eco Homestay offers a peaceful stop along the Leh–Kharu highway, about 40 minutes from the airport. Nestled close to the historic Thiksey Monastery—the first Gelugpa monastery in Ladakh—this homestay connects you with the rich spiritual and cultural roots of the region.
The rooms are spacious, clean and thoughtfully set up with all the warmth and comfort a traveller needs after a long journey through Ladakh. Set right on the main Leh–Manali route, it’s an ideal place to rest, recharge and enjoy the hospitality of a local Ladakhi family, happy to welcome you into their home.
Kunzang is a warm-hearted homemaker who opened her doors—and her heart—to travelers a few years ago. When she’s not tending to her home or working on her small farm, she loves spending time with guests, exchanging stories and sharing the Ladakhi way of life.
Known for her ever-smiling face and generous hospitality, Kunzang ensures no guest leaves her home hungry. She prepares delicious local and comfort meals, using fresh, organic vegetables straight from her farm. Her passion for cooking and caring for people shines through in every meal and every interaction. Staying with Kunzang feels less like a booking—and more like coming home.
The authenticity of Thiksey Eco Homestay reflects in the food hosts cook for you and the way it is served. Sitting in a typical Ladakhi dining area-cum-kitchen, you will see a beautiful arrangement of copper and clay utensils. In this setup, piping hot soupy Thukpa would be served to you. The carrots, peas, potatoes and spinach used in your Thukpa are grown organically in a greenhouse built next to the homestay.
Just a short walk away is the iconic Thiksey Monastery, the first Gelugpa establishment in the region. It holds deep historical significance, as its founders followed the teachings of the great Buddhist reformer, Je Tsongkhap and helped spread the Gelugpa tradition across Ladakh. Start your day with a visit to the monastery to attend the early morning prayer session with the monks—a serene and soul-stirring experience. Nearby, explore the ruins of Nyarma Monastic University, believed to be the oldest university in Ladakh and an important centre of Buddhist learning in ancient times.
In the evening, take a quiet stroll through the local flower garden, a lovely spot to unwind and enjoy the gentle Ladakhi breeze. Whether you’re here for the history, spirituality, or simple natural beauty, Thiksey and its surroundings offer a rich and peaceful experience just steps from your stay.

Guests often leave with more than memories; they leave with a sense of warmth, belonging and stories to cherish.
Guests like to eat our Ladakhi food. They say it is delicious, even when it is prepared by an elderly ama (mother) like me. I always make sure I serve them the cleanest and healthiest food. My husband is a copper artist. When guests leave us, they say ‘Julley’, and hug us. It makes us feel happy.
I became a Mountain Homestay Host in 2018, and I have hosted many travellers since then. Running a homestay has helped me and my family a lot. Not only is the solar set up in our house useful for us, but even travellers prefer to stay in our homestay because of it.
The training we got in astronomy turned out to be a life-changing experience for our village. I felt happy and proud while mapping the position of the planets and sharing the secrets of the universe with the tourists. Tourists told me that even they didn’t know so much about the dark skies!
