Stay in wilderness of Zanskar!
Pidmo is a small and charming village on the banks of the Zanskar River, home to around 20 traditional Ladakhi households. Life here still follows age-old practices, with every family engaged in farming. The villagers cultivate barley, wheat, peas, and other grains that thrive in the high-altitude fields.
In summer, the fields come alive with colorful butterflies fluttering around ancient stupas and the sacred site of Kaganik, while the surrounding mountains are dotted with wild juniper trees. Villagers can often be seen herding their cattle across the valley and up into the mountains, a timeless rhythm of life that continues unchanged for generations.
Pidmo offers a deep sense of peace and natural beauty, where visitors often feel disconnected from the outside world. Just a half-hour drive from Padum, it is an ideal stop to experience authentic village life, enjoy the scenic landscapes, and witness the cultural richness of Zanskar.
Stanzin Nangsal, with her innocent smile and gentle nature, runs the homestay together with her brother, a professional trekking guide. Both in their 20s, they bring a natural warmth and sincerity to their home. Nangsal looks after the farm and household with dedication, while her brother shares his knowledge of the mountains and life in Zanskar. Their simplicity, hard work and genuine care make every guest feel not just welcomed, but truly part of their home.
At the homestay, meals are prepared with care using fresh vegetables from the family’s fields and local produce. You can enjoy traditional Ladakhi dishes like thukpa, skyu and momos, along with simple Indian favorites such as rice, dal and seasonal vegetables. Each meal is homemade and served in the cozy family kitchen, offering a genuine experience of Ladakhi hospitality.
In Pidmo, the houses are simple and traditional, built in an old architectural style that reflects the village’s roots. You may come across men weaving on local looms or women roasting barley in the courtyards. The surrounding fields are especially beautiful, where villagers still follow the traditional trail leading to Hanamur village along the Zanskar River. In the early mornings, the village comes alive as families head out with their cattle, guiding them towards the valley and mountain pastures

Guests like to eat our Ladakhi food. They say it is delicious, even when it is prepared by an elderly ama (mother) like me. I always make sure I serve them the cleanest and healthiest food. My husband is a copper artist. When guests leave us, they say ‘Julley’, and hug us. It makes us feel happy.
I became a Mountain Homestay Host in 2018, and I have hosted many travellers since then. Running a homestay has helped me and my family a lot. Not only is the solar set up in our house useful for us, but even travellers prefer to stay in our homestay because of it.
The training we got in astronomy turned out to be a life-changing experience for our village. I felt happy and proud while mapping the position of the planets and sharing the secrets of the universe with the tourists. Tourists told me that even they didn’t know so much about the dark skies!
