Stay at the Edge of the Wild!
Kurambik, a small remote village in Domkhar, Ladakh with just 20 households, sits near a glacier and preserves its traditional way of life in close harmony with nature. In winter, the surrounding mountains turn into a wildlife haven, home to the elusive snow leopard, blue sheep, ibex and Himalayan foxes. Agriculture is the community’s lifeline, with grains and the prized sweet peas, exported beyond Ladakh, supporting livelihoods despite the harsh climate. Life here reflects resilience and simplicity, sustained by land, livestock, glacier-fed streams and strong communal bonds, making Kurambik a rare example of Ladakhi traditions thriving in the high-altitude wilderness.
The host, a retired Army personnel, now lives in the village with his family. After years of life surrounded by the camaraderie of the Army, the sudden quiet of civilian life felt unusual. Nestled on a secluded hill across the stream, the only house on that side, he built this homestay to welcome travelers, filling his home with warmth, stories and a sense of connection once again.
The hosts serve delicious Ladakhi dishes, thoughtfully adapted to suit a variety of taste preferences, along with familiar staples like roti, dal, rice and vegetables. Meals are enjoyed in a traditional Ladakhi dining space, beautifully decorated with local crockery that adds to the cultural charm. With most ingredients sourced directly from the village farms, every meal offers a genuine farm-to-table experience made with fresh, organic produce.
Perched on a quiet hilltop across the stream, Kurambik Eco Homestay offers unmatched seclusion and sweeping views of Ladakh’s rugged mountains. Being the only house on this side of the village, it provides a rare opportunity to truly disconnect from the rush of daily life and immerse in silence. Its location near snow leopard territory makes winter stays especially exciting, with chances to spot subtle signs of wildlife adding a touch of wilderness to the experience.
The homestay is also an excellent base for a scenic day trek to Lake Tsoskam, a hidden jewel surrounded by untouched landscapes. Guests are welcomed with freshly harvested organic vegetables from village farms, hearty Ladakhi meals and the warmth of traditional hospitality. With its cozy living spaces, cultural charm and proximity to nature, Kurambik Eco Homestay blends comfort, authenticity and adventure, making it one of Ladakh’s most rewarding offbeat stays.

Guests like to eat our Ladakhi food. They say it is delicious, even when it is prepared by an elderly ama (mother) like me. I always make sure I serve them the cleanest and healthiest food. My husband is a copper artist. When guests leave us, they say ‘Julley’, and hug us. It makes us feel happy.
I became a Mountain Homestay Host in 2018, and I have hosted many travellers since then. Running a homestay has helped me and my family a lot. Not only is the solar set up in our house useful for us, but even travellers prefer to stay in our homestay because of it.
The training we got in astronomy turned out to be a life-changing experience for our village. I felt happy and proud while mapping the position of the planets and sharing the secrets of the universe with the tourists. Tourists told me that even they didn’t know so much about the dark skies!
