The Astro Retreat is nestled in the remote beauty of Ladakh, approximately 163 km from Leh, and reachable in about 7 hours via the scenic Chang La Pass. Located in a quaint village renowned for its striking turquoise Pangong lake and the iconic Changthang pashmina goats, the retreat offers a unique blend of nature, culture and history.

Just beyond the lake lies the border village of Chushul, rich with stories from the 1962 war, including the heroic tales of Rezang La. We offer one-day excursions to this last village of Ladakh, where travelers have the rare opportunity to connect with the region’s living history—through stories personally shared by some of the few remaining men who witnessed that time.

The homestay is celebrated for its traditional-modern architecture, warm hospitality and immersive cultural folklores. Set against the backdrop of the enchanting Pangong Tso, it provides a serene escape into village life. Guests can spend the day with local women, learning the art of pashmina weaving, or simply soak in the tranquility of this untouched landscape.

Tragias, now retired, spent his life teaching local children and continues to be a beloved figure in the village. His roots go back to a time when his family lived a nomadic life across the Changthang region, and he has countless stories to share about those simpler days—long before Pangong became a tourist destination. His wife, warm and welcoming, often speaks about local beliefs and the traditional understanding of astronomy passed down through generations.
Staying with them feels like stepping into a living storybook of Ladakh. Be sure to ask them to show you their 100-year-old ancestral home—its rooms and old farming tools quietly hold the memories of a time gone by.

The families of Maan village have brought innovation to their local farming too. To decrease dependency on the market far away from the village, locals have started growing the vegetable and fruits at their backyard. A single day in Maan village can never quite capture all that it has to offer. Nestled along the 80 km shoreline of Pangong Tso, this quiet village is part of a region rich in culture, history and natural beauty. Spend time with the pashmina herders of Changthang and learn how the soft, raw pashmina is collected—a tradition deeply tied to the land. Visit the Rezang La War Memorial, a moving tribute to the bravery of the soldiers who fought in the 1962 Indo-Sino war. Wander through the village to find the old gompa (monastery) and meet local women weaving not just pashmina, but their hopes and heritage into beautiful handcrafted pieces.

And if you’re up for a little adventure, there are several lesser-known hikes that begin right from the homestay’s backyard—perfect for those who want to explore the untouched corners of Changthang Region.

Hosted by a warm Ladakhi family, the retreat sits along the road leading to Chushul, one of Ladakh’s last villages near the border. From your window, the serene Pangong Tso stretches out in shimmering blues, inviting slow mornings and peaceful evenings.
Spend your days with Changthang’s pashmina herders, visit the historic Rezang La Memorial, watch migratory birds in silence, or simply sip butter tea as the sun sets over the mountains. Every moment here invites you to slow down and just be.

We were lucky to stay at the Astrostays at Pangong Lake. The house is overlooking the lake. The rooms are very comfortable and the bathroom is essential but perfectly functional. The living room is in the traditional Ladakhi style. The family running the homestay (brother and two sisters) is so nice that we regretted staying only for one night. We absolutely recommend this place.

Lovely Family and Lovely Home. We stayed at Thiksey Eco Homestay for one night as the Thiksey Monastery is close by. The whole family is very welcoming. The two daughters are engineers, son is very knowledgeable, friendly and a passionate photographer besides being a Trip Host. The mother is a nice lady and cooks delicious momos and cookies. The father is very warm and down to earth. We enjoyed a very homely stay. The hosts are requested to provide a little hard bed and provide some cloth hanging strip in the bathroom. If a hand wash bottle could also be kept. The hosts are superb.

Clean place, welcoming and accommodative hosts, provide help and guidance to prehistoric sites on Indus River. Provided lunch and dinner in pure Ladhaki style that was delicious at Domkhar Eco Homestay. Would highly recommend this serene location by an absolutely pure glacier fed mountain stream. Enjoy the tall peaks for a perfect R&R.

What a lovely family, we absolutely loved our stay at Padum Eco Homestay! Everyone was so warm and welcoming, it truly felt like home. The food was delicious and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Perfect location with beautiful views. Great value for money and very family-friendly. Highly recommend!

The Sakti Eco Homestay is run by an Army veteran and his wife , helped by their daughter when she is with them.
They are very kind and hospitable, we have very tasty yet homely food made by them that was very soothing after a long trip of eating outside food. The house the surrounded by garden / vegetation and is in the middle of a farm with lovely views of the mountains around.
A memorable stay I must say !
