Rangdum, with its monastery and the attendant village of Julldo, Tashi Thongzes, and Shakma Karpo is the last inhabited region in the Suru valley of the region of Kargil. Rangdum monastery, a fortress-like structured perched on the small hilltop surrounded by painted and rugged glacial walls of Himalaya at an altitude of 3,657 m. 

This gorgeous valley far in the isolation of Suru Valley of Ladakh is adorned by fascinating and painted peaks on one side and stunning glaciers along with rugged mountains on the other side. Secluded from the rest of the valley, Rangdum monastery is the ultimate place to wind up, relax, and get rejuvenated while having a tryst with the enchanting beauty of nature.

The journey you will be taking
Arrive at high altitude: Day 1 – Day 2
  • Land in Leh at 3500m and acclimatize
  • Visit main attractions and know the local culture
  • Spend a leisure time in the main town

Day 1Acclimatization at Leh

We will pick you up from Leh airport at 3500m, and escort you to the hotel in a car. Today just take rest and acclimatize yourself for the high altitude and low oxygen level. In the evening, take a stroll to the town of Leh. Sleep overnight at the hotel in Leh.

Day 2Sight seeing around Leh

Today we will explore some of the monasteries around Leh. After breakfast, we’ll visit the monastery and palace of Shey. The gilded copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha here is a must see. Later we’ll visit the Potala palace resembling monastery of Thiksey and then the Hemis Monastery, the largest monastery of Ladakh. In the evening enjoy sunset and city view from Shanti Stupa.

Day 3Leh to Kargil

Today we start our journey to Kargil. On the way, after a ride of 65 km, we will visit the 10th century-old Alchi Monastery, a jewel of colors and forms the ancient Gandhara arts statues and wall paintings. Later we reach the unearthly moon-land hills of Lamayuru. Drive further along beautiful fields of barley and apricot trees to finally reach Kargil. Stay overnight at the Hotel in Kargil.

Journey through mountains: Day 4 – Day 6
  • Long drive to monastery through Suru Valley
  • Visit the monastery and museum to find rare artifacts
  • Stay in a remote village surrounded by mountains

Day 4Kargil to Rangdum

Drive to Rangdum is through the beautiful Suru Valley. Suru valley differentiates the valley of Zanskar from the rest of Kargil. We ride through the valley with barley fields on both sides of the road. We reach the village of Rangdum, a group of 3 hamlets separated over a varied distance with the Rangdum monastery as its crown on a hillock. Stay overnight at one of our solar homestays.

Day 5Rangdum Stay

After a healthy homecooked breakfast, trek along the road to reach the Rangdum monastery, an important temple of Zanskar. Built in the 18th century, the monastery belongs to the Gelugpa order of Buddhism and home to some 40 monks. After the visit to the monastery walk to the nearby villages to explore the distinct culture of the Zanskari people. Stay tonight at your cozy homestay.

Day 6Rangdum to Kargil

Today we will drive towards Kargil. After a few hours of drive from Rangdum, we enter into the Suru valley, where you will enjoy the view of massive Nun and Kun peaks and the Parkachik glacier. There are many other unnamed glacier peaks on the way. By noon you will be at Kargil the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh. In Kargil stay overnight at Hotel.

Return to main town: Day 7
  • Take the scenic journey via glaciers, passes and high peaks
  • Stop at massive statue of the Future Buddha
  • Get back to Leh and spend relaxed evening before departure

Day 7Kargil to Leh

Today is the last day of the journey. After breakfast, riding some half an hour en-route visit the monastery and the nine meters tall statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha at Mulbekh. Ride for 3 hours to reach Likir monastery the splendid Dharma Wheel Gompa. Our 7-day journey finally comes to an end as we reach back to the hustle-bustle of Leh town.
