A literal gem of Ladakh nestled in Nubra Valley

If Ladakh is a crown of India, the crystal rocks of Aranoo village are the precious stones embedded in it

Why we love this homestay?
  • Village of natural crystal rocks
  • Wake up to a view of mountains
Aranoo Homestay

“What a gem of a place!” – such reactions have a literal meaning in the village that has quietly been preserving the natural treasure it has got. Aranoo – surrounded by sharp mountains and on the banks of the Siachen River is a village where an interesting phenomenon of Crystal Rock occurs. These uncommon rocks are scientifically called as Albitite Rocks. The crystal formation of minerals in the Granitoid Rock gives these rocks a distinct colour and shine. Other than the Siachen River belt, the Swat Valley of Pakistan is the only place in the Himalayas where these rocks are found. Here in Aranoo, when you come to enjoy the pristine views of mountains, these rock sites become a must-visit place for you. Hike on off-beaten Crystal Rock Trail and spot the Crystal Rock. The only rule is – no taking these stones back with you! They look beautiful only in the wilderness and not on your shelves.

Hear from communities

  • Guests like to eat our Ladakhi food. They say it is delicious, even when it is prepared by an elderly ama (mother) like me. I always make sure I serve them the cleanest and healthiest food. My husband is a copper artist. When guests leave us, they say ‘Julley’, and hug us. It makes us feel happy.

  • I became a Mountain Homestay Host in 2018, and I have hosted many travellers since then. Running a homestay has helped me and my family a lot. Not only is the solar set up in our house useful for us, but even travellers prefer to stay in our homestay because of it.

  • The training we got in astronomy turned out to be a life-changing experience for our village. I felt happy and proud while mapping the position of the planets and sharing the secrets of the universe with the tourists. Tourists told me that even they didn’t know so much about the dark skies!
